About Us

Crafting is for everyone

Hilboldt Industries sells handicraft supplies and craft kits for all ages, specializing in textile arts. Our all-in-one kits for latch hook designs are complete with latch hook, hand-painted canvas and detailed instructions, with all the plush, pre-cut yarn you will need for your project.

Hilboldt Industries grew from Merritt Makes, an online fabric store opened in 2018 by Missy Hilboldt and her daughter, Merritt Duncan. Merritt took over in 2020, and, with lots of time alone at home, began brainstorming a new direction to take the company. In 2021, Merritt founded Hilboldt Industries to begin development of modern, amusing craft kits for all ages and started hiring some of her favorite people to help.

Merritt learned how to sew at a young age and has continued, compulsively, to make things out of fabric and string ever since—even when time, money or space was not on her side. Professionally, Merritt’s resume is eclectic: she has been a cheesemonger, a library assistant, a promo girl, and more! While completing her degree in Creative Writing at Columbia University, Merritt worked as hand-finisher at a costume shop, sewing snaps and buttons onto Broadway costumes and encrusting Rockette leotards with Swarovski crystals. More recently, Merritt has worked as a data analyst and continued learning about coding, including training through Launchcode with an emphasis on Javascript. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri, near Tower Grove Park with her dog, Lenny, and cat, Hamburglar.

Carla’s knack for numbers and keen attention to detail (she lives by the motto “measure twice, cut once”) can be traced as far back as her childhood days scooping up and counting baby chicks on an Indiana farm. As soon as she could, this lifelong White Sox fan moved to the big city (Chicago), to attend the Honor’s Accounting Program at DePaul University. During her 20 years in Chicago, she worked for a top accounting firm (not the lifestyle for her), played on numerous recreational sports teams, owned a bar, ran a catering side hustle, befriended famous comedians, and met the love of her life, Claire. After a three-year stint in Portland, Oregon, they returned to the Midwest to be closer to family, settling in St. Louis (Claire’s hometown). While she’ll never adjust to the humidity, Carla loves St. Louis’ vibrant community of artists and makers, and its willingness to embrace unique small, local businesses. As someone who truly thrives when she’s wearing many different hats and can make anyone laugh, she’s a perfect fit for the Hilboldt Industries team. She lives in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood in the City of St. Louis with her wife, their toddler, Linus, and 4 chickens (Blanche, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia).

Tess has spent most of her life successfully avoiding writing a bio of any kind. Drawing has been the constant in her life while zigzagging from home in St Louis, out to the west, and back again.  One-off zines and paper sculptures with layers and moving parts are some of her favorite things to create. Her working life has been spent entirely in the food and bev industry, front end and back. She recently moved from Denver back home, where she can be found fishing perfectly good scraps out of the recycling bin.
